“I’ve started to live again, to enjoy every day and to get involved in everything. For me, being active means being happy.”

How the team at Motivation Romania used a wheelchair provided through CLASP to give one client a new lease on life.

Dan Visniuc, 58, lives with his wife in a village in Covasna County, central Romania. In 2012, his life changed dramatically when he had both of his legs amputated due to a medical condition. The physical and emotional impacts were extremely hard and Dan became increasingly isolated and less involved in social and household activities.

When staff from the Motivation Romania team in Brasov first met him, Dan was struggling to use a wheelchair that had not been properly fitted to his size and physical requirements. The wheelchair had become a barrier to Dan’s mobility and independence.

The Motivation Romania team properly assessed Dan’s needs according to the WHO 8-Steps of Wheelchair Service Provision and donated a standard wheelchair, enabling Dan to regain his mobility and rebuild his self confidence.

Dan views his wheelchair as not just a mobility device or accessory; but as a key to living an active and fulfilled life. He can now fix things around the house, feels safer and is able to help his wife with household activities. Perhaps most importantly, he’s able to participate in and enjoy family and community gatherings. As Dan explains, “I’ve started to live again, to enjoy every day and to get involved in everything. For me, being active means being happy.”
